Southern New Hampshire University came up short in Friday’s NCAA Division II second-round matchup against Long Island University-Post, and, as a result of the 4-3 loss, the Penmen drop to the losers’ portion of the East bracket.
A quick turnaround left SNHU with no time to dwell on the loss since it was scheduled to play Felician on Friday at 9 p.m. at Penmen Field in Hooksett.
The winner of Friday’s late game advanced to play LIU-Post Saturday at noon.
Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the ninth inning, Joshua Goldstein started things off with a single to right-center field and quickly scored when the next batter, Alex Kennedy, came off the bench and blasted a two-run home run.
Bow’s Tom Blandini followed with a single and reached second with two outs on a single by Goffstown’s Dakota Mulcay.
But ECC Pitcher of the Year Joshua Loeschorn recorded the final out on a grounder to record the save.
Meanwhile, Franklin Pierce University was eliminated from the NCAA Division II baseball tournament after suffering losses to NYIT and Wilmington (Del.) on Friday.
The Ravens dropped the first game 9-3 before falling 12-10 in the second. FPU ends its season with a 29-24 record.
NEC pulls upset
A five-run eighth inning propelled New England College to an upset win over No. 3 Southern Maine University in the first round of the NCAA Division III baseball tournament on Friday, setting the Pilgrims up for a second-round match-up with the winner of Oswego State and MIT on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Gorham, Maine.
With a 5-2 lead in hand, Connor Morin plated Christian Aybar with an RBI single. Luis Astiles added a single to center field with the bases loaded, scoring two, and a Nick Powers base hit down the left field line sent Xavier Nunez home. Atiles put the final tally on the board when he scored from third on a Jameson Carey sacrifice fly.
Powers went the distance on the mound, striking out five and allowing nine hits.
