The Saint Anselm College field hockey team's dream season came to a tough ending on Sunday.
Top-seeded West Chester scored a pair of first-quarter goals and held off the Hawks the rest of the way en route to a 2-1 victory in the NCAA Division II field hockey championship game at Millersville (Pa.) University.
The goals were just the fifth and sixth tallies allowed by the Hawks (20-3) this season.
Freshman Maeve Murphy scored Saint Anselm's lone goal with seven seconds left in the first half off a penalty corner. Senior Mary Nee picked up an assist on the play.
Junior goalkeeper Julia Hand made nine saves for the Hawks, who won their first Northeast 10 title and earned the top seed in the tournament's East bracket.
Saint Anselm advanced to the title game after defeating No. 2 East Stroudsburg 1-0 in double overtime on Friday in the semifinal round.
