The Plymouth State University men’s hockey team shut out Salem State 3-0 on Saturday night in the MASCAC tournament championship game at sold-out Hanaway Rink in Plymouth.

With the win, Plymouth State earned the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division III hockey tournament for the third time in program history. The Panthers will learn their first-round foe when the NCAA reveals the field during its selection show on NCAA.com today at 10:30 a.m.

Senior Ryan Stevens scored once and added an assist for the Panthers (17-7-3). Michael Covach and Henrik Axelson also scored for PSU, and goalie Evan Morelli made 17 saves for his program-record ninth career shutout.

The win was the fourth of the season for Plymouth State over Salem State.

Big Green to play St. Lawrence

Helped by its 5-2 win at RPI on Saturday night, the Dartmouth College men’s hockey team finished fifth in the ECAC and will host St. Lawrence University next weekend in the first round of the conference’s tournament.

The Big Green and Saints, who finished 12th (last), will play a best-of-three series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, if necessary, at Thompson Arena. The Saints are coached by former Manchester Monarchs coach Mark Morris.

On Saturday, Will Graber notched a hat trick and Drew O’Connor scored twice as Dartmouth improved to 11-14-4 overall, 10-9-3 in the ECAC.

Dartmouth junior goalie Adrian Clark stopped 21 shots for the win.
