In her first collegiate season, Exeter’s Jackie Gaughan will compete for an individual national title at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 5-8 at the University of Texas.

Gaughan, a freshman at Notre Dame, earned her spot in the 10,000-meter run at the championship meet by placing second in the event on the first day of the NCAA East Region Championships Thursday at the University of North Florida.

Gaughan, who won the Union Leader’s 2017 Jenny Thompson Female Athlete of the Year award while attending Exeter High School, earned a personal-best time of 33 minutes, 9.76 seconds at the East Region Championships. Her Fighting Irish teammate, senior Anna Rohrer, won the event in a facility-record time of 33:07.9.
