Brad Roberto and Dylan Jones powered Franklin Pierce University to a 3-2 upset win over top seed Southern New Hampshire University in a Northeast-10 Conference tournament game at Hooksett's Penmen Field on Tuesday. Roberto and Jones scored or drove in all three runs for the Ravens to give them an early lead.
The Ravens, seeded fourth, advanced to play Le Moyne on Thursday, though the time and location has yet to be determined. SNHU will await its NCAA East Regional fate when the NCAA Selection Show airs Sunday at 10 p.m.
Roberto struck first in the opening frame, sending a single into left field that plated Joel Lara, who had reached second after singling himself and then advancing on an error. Roberto later scored in the third inning when a Jonel Ozuna sacrifice fly chased him in from third base.
Jones provided the exclamation point in the fourth, cracking a solo home run over the center field fence to put the Ravens ahead, 3-0.
SNHU wouldn't go down quietly. After Danny Gracia pitched four innings of shutout ball, the Penmen finally got to the FPU starter before he could get out of the fifth. With one out in the frame, Jake Coro made the 90-foot jaunt home on an Idelson Taveras groundout to second. Bow's Tom Blandini then blasted a solo shot to right field.
Evan Glew took the ball from Gracia following the home run and went on to shut down the SNHU offense over the next 3 2/3 innings, giving up one hit while striking out six. Zach Hart came in with one down in the bottom of the ninth to slam the door, notching his first collegiate save.
