No. 20 Saint Anselm started its NCAA Division II Super Regional three-game series against No. 23 Long Island University-Post with a 5-1 loss on Thursday.

Morgan Perry struggled in the circle, leaving head coach Jill Gagnon no choice but to pull her after she allowed three runs in 3 1/3 innings of work. While Perry's line doesn't seem so bad at first glance, a deeper dive will show she served up two home runs in the fourth inning.

Breanna Klaiber hit the first of the pair for LIU-Post, a solo shot to left center field, and three batters later, Ashley Melendez contributed a two-run jack to center, giving the Pioneers a 3-1 lead.

LIU-Post struck for two more runs in the sixth inning. Hanna Finkelstein recorded an RBI single and filled the bases for Klaiber to pick up an RBI walk.

A Kat Stackrow RBI double in the first inning plated the only Hawks run.

Game 2 will be played Friday at noon at Saint Anselm's South Athletic Fields.
