Santiago Espinal bunted home the winning run in the eighth inning and top prospect Nate Pearson submitted another outstanding pitching performance in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' 2-1 win at Akron in an Eastern League contest on Thursday night.
Espinal's safety squeeze bunt, on a 1-0 pitch, chased home Logan Warmoth and broke a 1-1 tie. Warmoth started the rally with a one-out walk, then scampered to third on Forrest Wall's single.
Pearson, the starter, worked six shutout innings, allowing two hits. He walked three and struck out five. In his last two outings, Pearson has pitched 11 2/3 innings, allowing no runs and two hits while fanning 13.
Vinny Nittoli (2-2) pitched the seventh, allowing the Akron run. Jake Fishman worked a scoreless eighth, and Corey Copping pitched a perfect ninth for his first save.
Kevin Smith accounted for New Hampshire's other run with a fifth-inning solo homer.
The teams play again today at noon.
