Hartford scored seven runs off Fisher Cats starter Hector Perez in three innings as the Yard Goats beat New Hampshire 10-5 Thursday night in Hartford, Conn., to kick off a four-game series.
New Hampshire took a 1-0 lead on Kevin Smith's first-inning homer but Hartford scored four in the second on run-scoring hits by Vince Fernandez, Arvicent Perez and Manuel Melendez, and a sacrifice fly Willie Abreu.
Nash Knight and Chad Spanberger drove in runs in the third to bring the Fisher Cats back to 4-3, but Fernandez' three-run homer in the bottom of the inning upped Hartford's edge to 7-3.
New Hampshire's Brock Lundquist hit a two-rin single in the four to make it 7-5 but the Fisher Cats got no closer as Hartford scored runs in the fourth, fifth and eighth.
Smith and Knight had three hits apiece for New Hampshire. Perez took the loss. Heath Holder (1-0) got the win for Hartford in relief.
The teams play again Friday night at 7 in Hartford.
