MANCHESTER — This year’s New Hampshire Women’s Golf Association Junior Championship winner and runner-up reside on the same street. On her dad’s birthday, 12-year-old Carys Fennessy bested her neighbor and last year’s junior champion, Shivani Vora, to win her first NHWGA Junior title Thursday at Intervale Country Club.
Fennessy, a Dover resident who plays out of Cochecho Country Club, posted a 2-under-par 71 to win both the overall and Junior 18-Hole Division crowns while Vora finished runner-up in both categories with her 3-over 76.
Fennessy, who has competed in the tournament four times, finished third in the Junior division and fourth overall last year with an 11-over score. Vora, a Portsmouth Country Club member, won last year’s title with a 1-under 72.
After the first three holes, Fennessy said she started having success with her driver and felt she putted well throughout the day.
“Lately, I haven’t been hitting my driver well but I figured that out, which put me in positions that I needed to be in and then I putted pretty solid,” Fennessy said.
Fennessy and Vora, who played in the same group together, owned the top two spots after nine holes. Fennessy bogeyed hole No. 4 but birdied holes Nos. 6 and 9 to earn a 1-under 35 and led Vora by three strokes at the turn.
Vora pulled within a stroke by posting birdies on two of her first five holes on the back nine but bogeyed three of her final four. Fennessy birdied hole Nos. 15 and 17 and did no worse than par on all but one of her final nine holes to clinch the victory.
Fennessy said she got into a rhythm over the final five holes, with her lone blemish over that stretch being her bogey on No. 18. Fennessy was especially happy with her performance on hole No. 6/15. The soon-to-be seventh grader at Dover Middle School birdied both times she played that hole; she double bogeyed it the last few times she played Intervale before the tournament.
Fennessy said competing in the same group as Vora pushed her to play better.
“She’s my neighbor,” Fennessy said of Vora. “It was fun to play with her.”
Alexis St. Laurent finished third overall and won the Senior 18-Hole Division for the second consecutive year with her 10-over score. Madelyn Savary won the 9-Hole Mini Division with her 2-under 34. Ryan Burke won the Pee Wee Division with a score of 49. Reagan MacLeay took the Munchkin Division crown with a 37. Harper Pederson and Adalynn Allard tied for the Cricket Division title, as both earned a 58.
