Passaconaway of Litchfield Country Club’s John DeVito was one of two golfers in the 116th New Hampshire Amateur Championship’s 156-player field to break par on Monday at Portsmouth Country Club in Greenland.

DeVito, who has won the past two NHGA Mid-Amateur Match Play Championships, leads the field entering the second day of stroke play qualifying Tuesday after shooting a two-under-par 70 on Monday. His round Monday included 17 pars and one eagle.

“You have to play at least a club or two shorter on a lot of the holes because of the firmness,” DeVito said of the Portsmouth CC course in a news release. “I made all my short putts and made a long one on No. 11 for eagle and didn’t really get into much trouble. I was kind of hitting it all over the place with my driver but this is kind of the place to do that.”

Breakfast Hill Golf Club member Ryan Quinn enters Tuesday in second place with a one-under-par 71. Like DeVito, Quinn also noticed the course’s firm greens throughout his round on Monday. His approach entering Tuesday is to be more methodical and map his way through the golf course.

Nashua CC member and three-time State Am champion Phil Pleat, who will be inducted into the New Hampshire Golf Hall of Fame in October, Craig Steckowych (Portsmouth CC), Brett Wilson (Golf Club of New England), Derek Leclair (Nashua CC), Ryan Brown (Manchester CC) and Taylor Simpson (The Oaks Golf Links) all enter Tuesday tied for third with an even-par 72.

DeVito and Simpson are in Tuesday’s first tee off group at 7:30 a.m. Steckowych (8:51 a.m.) will also tee off during Tuesday’s morning session. Pleat (12:30 p.m.), Wilson, (12:30 p.m.), Quinn (12:48 p.m.) and Leclair (2 p.m.) will tee off in the afternoon on Tuesday.
