NEWBURY — Matt Paradis of Concord CC came out firing on all cylinders in Saturday’s first round of the NHGA Players Invitational, carding eight birdies and two bogeys to shoot a 6-under par 66 at Baker Hill Golf Club.

Paradis, a two-time Players Invitational champion who just finished up his senior season at Southern New Hampshire University, leads the Regular Division by five strokes.

Trailing Paradis is Pat Pelletier of Carter CC, who shot a 1-under par, 71. Pelletier had five birdies, including three in his last four holes to give himself some momentum heading to Sunday’s final round.

In the Senior Division, Andy Hunnewell of Carter CC had a 3-under par 69. Making the turn at 1-over, Hunnewell turned it around on the back and put up four birdies for a back nine 32. The next closest competitor is Baker Hill GC member Jim Jankowski, who shot even-par 72 on his home course.

The Players Invitational is a two-day, 36-hole championship featuring the top players from the NHGA Thomas J. Leonard Jr. Player of the Year points list from 2018. The final round of the tournament will begin at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday.
