For the second consecutive year, Nashua Country Club’s James Pleat came back to win the New Hampshire Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship on Thursday at Baker Hill Golf Club in Newbury. Pleat finished at 7-under-par for the tournament, overcoming a two-stroke deficit to Ridgewood CC of Moultonborough’s Jim Cilley, who finished second at 5-under.

Pleat jumped in front early on Thursday as he finished his front nine at 2-under while Cilley made the turn at 2-over for the day. The two found themselves in a deadlock through 16 holes after Cilley birdied the 14th, 15th and 16th holes. Pleat responded over the last two holes with birdies, which sealed the win as Cilley failed to match with pars on each hole.

Pleat, who fired a tournament-best 4-under in Thursday’s final round, became the fifth player to win back-to-back Mid-Amateur Championships. Lake Sunapee CC’s Nick MacDonald was the only other player to finish the tournament under par at 3-under.
