GREENLAND — Manchester Country Club’s Ryan Brown fired a two-round total of 141, taking medalist honors Tuesday in the 116th New Hampshire Amateur Championship at Portsmouth Country Club.
By finishing at the top, Brown also earned the No. 1 seed for match play, which begins Wednesday. His opponent in the Round of 64 will be Derek Leclair of Nashua Country Club.
Brown, a recent graduate of Bryant University, came to Portsmouth in the opening round without having seen the course before. He fired an even-par, 72 on Monday and a 69 on Tuesday.
“Once I got to the back, I made a couple pars and then on the 12th hole I made a 50-footer for birdie that kind of kickstarted it”, said Brown.
Despite his five-over par 77 in the opening round, Brandon Gillis (Souhegan Woods GC) went out and shot the low round for the day with a six-under, 66. Gillis advanced to the semifinal round of match play last year.
What was the difference between the two days for Gillis? “The putter got going for me today. I didn’t feel like I had to work too hard today because I was hitting it pretty close. But I just have to keep it in the fairway and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
Alongside Gillis at one-under for the stroke play qualifying rounds are Ryan Quinn (Breakfast Hill GC) and Sam Barton (Kingswood GC). Quinn shot one-under, 71 in the first round and came back to shoot even par in the second round to secure the fourth seed for match play. Barton shot one over par in the opening round but turned it around to shoot an impressive two-under par to be one of the four golfers who finished under par for the two days.
Golfers will play one round today. Two rounds are set for both Thursday and Friday, with a 36-hole final for the finalists on Saturday.
