MANCHESTER — The Conant High of Jaffrey basketball team has always been known for its discipline and sticking to the basics. Remaining true to those principles has won out once again for the Orioles, who are Division III champions after routing defending champion and top-seeded Somersworth 61-38 on Saturday at Stan Spirou Field House.
The third-seeded Orioles (17-4), who are champions for the first time since 2014, erupted for a 19-8 second quarter to give themselves a 16-point halftime cushion and they never turned back from there. Conant used 32 rebounds to generate 17 fast-break points compared to just five points in transition for Somersworth (18-3).
Four of five starters were in double figures for Conant, which was led by Jake Drew’s 16-point effort. Peyton Springfield followed Drew with 14 points and Anthony Gauthier posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Evan Gray and Travis Wright scored 13 and 10 points to pace Somersworth, which shot just 31 percent from the field.
