There’s a new No. 1 in the New Hampshire Union Leader High School Football Power Poll.
Winnacunnet High of Hampton, which has outscored opponents 72-20 in its two games — both victories — replaces Salem High at the top. The Blue Devils (1-1) fell to the No. 6 spot after losing to Bishop Guertin, 17-14, on Saturday night at Stellos Stadium.
Today marks the first time since the Aug. 31, 2018 preseason poll that Winnacunnet has been ranked No. 1. The Warriors were coming off a Division I state title and Power Poll championship the year before.
Winnacunnet, which moved up from the No. 2 spot, earned four of five first-place votes and 49 points, outpointing rival Exeter (46), which stayed at No. 2. The Blue Hawks are 2-0 and have outscored foes, 72-14.
Exeter is scheduled to host Winnacunnet on Saturday, Sept. 25.
Londonderry and Pinkerton Academy jumped into a tie for third (34 points), the Lancers from fifth, the Astros from fourth. Both are 2-0 and meet Friday, Sept. 24 in Derry. Before then, though, there are these Friday night matchups this weekend: BG, now No. 5, at Londonderry, and Pinkerton at Salem.
Returning to the poll this week is Bedford (1-1), at No. 7.
