The Manchester Monarchs were victorious in their return from the All-Star break on Friday, claiming a 2-1 win over the Maine Mariners at the Cross Insurance Arena in Portland, Maine. All the scoring took place in the first period, including Nic Pierog’s goal with 2:33 to play in the opening frame that proved to be the difference for the Monarchs (20-18-1-1).

Jack Nevins opened the scoring for Manchester halfway through the opening period, but a Greg Chase tally helped Maine even things at 1-1 three minutes later. Pierog poked his goal through after Sam Kurker crashed the net and left the puck on the post for Pierog to clean up.

Monarchs goalie Charles Williams posted 37 saves while Manchester killed off all five Maine power plays.

The Monarchs and Mariners are back at it tonight in Manchester with a 6 p.m. start at SNHU Arena.
