The Southern New Hampshire baseball team, facing elimination after losing on Friday, knocked off Long Island University Post twice Saturday, including a 4-1 victory in the deciding game, to win the NCAA Division II East Regional final and advance to the Super Regional.
Marcus Chavez blasted a three-run home run to left-center field in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-1 tie and propel the No. 17 Penmen to victory.
SNHU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Tom Blandini scored on Dakota Mulcay’s groundout.
LIU Post tied it in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Andy Camilo, setting up Chavez’ heroics.
Alex Gomes got the win in relief for SNHU, scattering two hits and a walk while striking out two in 4 2/3 innings of relief.
Earlier in the day, SNHU scored eight straight runs to overcome an early 2-0 deficit and roll to an 8-2 victory.
Left fielder Alex Kennedy homered and drove in two runs while right fielder Kevin Alexy went 5-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs. Joshua Zbierski, Jake Coro, Joshua Goldstein and Idelsen Tavares also had RBIS.
Wesley Tobin went seven strong innings for SNHU, giving up just one earned run on seven hits and three walks while striking out eight.
