Sony Michel

Patriots running back Sony Michel addresses the media at a news conference before the Super Bowl in February.

Patriots running back Sony Michel will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform List, according to a source.

Michel underwent an arthroscopic surgery on his knee this offseason. He was sidelined for the majority of OTAs and for all three minicamp practices.

As a rookie, Michel rushed for 1,267 yards and 12 touchdowns in 16 games, including the playoffs. Michel battled through two separate knee injuries in his first NFL season.

Michel can return from the PUP list at any point in training camp. Veterans are due to report Wednesday. The Patriots’ first public training camp practice is scheduled for Thursday.

In addition to Michel, Patriots wide receiver Demaryius Thomas will begin camp on the PUP list. Signed as a free agent this past spring, Thomas is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon. He’ll be approximately eight and a half months removed from the injury when the regular season begins.
